I agree with Avinashjee tht we should let the valley go. It has gone on for too long. regards
I believe that we should let the valley go. We should allow a plebiscite and let them determine what they want to do - azadi or merger with pakistan. They have become a huge hole in the Indian economic pocket. Imagine ten times more money is given just to the valley (not Jammu or ladakh, just the valley) as compared to Bihar. In return, they give us terrorists. I have never seen so many ingrates crowded in such little territory. In any case, this area belongs to India in theory only. Practically it feels like another hostile country. Avinash
Avinash: I think the facts on the ground will tell you that it is too late for half measures.
I think the genii is out of the bottle. Yes India must remain a secular country whatever the protestations of the Hindu right, but a secular country with principle. You cannot consign millions of Hindus and Buddhists to the hegemony of theistic fundamentalist islam. And doing it in the name of secularism is obscene. Something has to give and my suspicion is that the J&K confederation will be the first thing to go.

Girdhar It is not that these proposals have not been there. There has been an active proposal in the past to carve out three regions from the todays J & K: Jammu, Kasmir and ladakh. But in the name of secularism and under pressure from the valley Kashmiris, this proposal has been shelved regardless of the fact that this is the sanest proposal. Perhaps S Roy Biswas's blog on the issue recounting the entire history should be read much more widely. Regards Avinash
Thank You CB: I love Nehru's speech. We did produce great men and women in the past: The same genes have come down the pike: where has the greatness gone ?

Avinash: I think India should make some basic decisions, whether the mirage of Kashmir is really a useful one. Make sure of controlling the relevants strategic heights of the vale also carve out a tehsil for the Pandits to br s psrt of the new Jammu state and hand over the rest to the Kashmiri Muslims under an agreed to formula of self rule. Then remove Jammu and Ladakh and make them states within the union. I do not think a majority Muslim state can live in any secular entity. I think the precepts are antithetical to freedom of religion.

Pertinent on this day. The only slogans of azadi that one hears are from the valley and that means secession. Alas! Avinash
Thanks!

BK: Thank You. I saw some of those founding fathers and knew some of them. What I detected in each one of them was an auro of self sacrifice which is absolutely absent with the current lot. Which should have been replaced with love of country which is also generally absent.

Independence Day A Far Cry from that Tryst with Destiny
posted 1 week agoAvinash and Palhali: I agree with the following proviso's: A small portion of the vale has to be carved out for the Pundits to be a part of India. Some more adjustments to give India the commanding heights to India for security. Removal of Jammu and Ladakh to be part of India(and no partition of these territories) and full right of settlement of Indian citizens in every part of India. Reintroduction of POTA with protections introduced to insure rights of accused and protection of habeas corpus and one set of private and public laws(all laws) for all citizens of India. I do not consider the rapacious pygmies that rule capable of implementing these measures.
